EffectiVet is a company of Practice Coaches dedicated to helping veterinary practice owners develop what we term effective veterinary practices. By ‘effective' we mean a practice where client, patient, health care team and owner needs are not just met, not just fulfilled but exceeded. We are convinced through the work we have done that veterinary care can be provided to animal owners through reasonable fees. We achieve a win-win scenario for practice and animal owner through systems that create an effective veterinary practice.

As many of you know I don't believe in retirement. However, I believe we must control the pace of work to avoid burning out. In the past few months I have been extremely busy with EffectiVet, Australia Consults, Lifelearn and writing. More important, time has been demanded by my grandchildren - I tend to spend a lot more time in toy stores now! In any case, I must practice what I preach so I have been looking for solutions to being far too busy. In early June I received a call from Dr Steve Noonan. He and his wife Diane have sold their interests in their practice in Dartmouth to be able to move back to Ontario to be closer to family. Steve and I have connected several times over the years as we tend to have the same philosophies of veterinary practice.

Steve developed a tremendously successful practice based on the same business concepts taught through EffectiVet; he has been involved with the CVMA in the development of Practice Management Standards for Canadian Practices; brought a large group of practice owners into a buying group; and brought 21 veterinarians and the Atlantic College together to form an Emergency Practice - significant achievements to facilitate collaboration of veterinarians.

Steve has always had a desire to share his expertise and experience with fellow practitioners. So when he called and asked whether I was ready or interested in a ‘succession plan' for EffectiVet it was an obvious choice for me. One of the missing links for me as a practice coach was the lack of current veterinary medical knowledge. I preach ‘medical protocols' but I have been out of practice too long to be able to specify medical treatments inherent in those protocols. Steve brings both the business concepts as well as recent practice experience to EffectiVet. I can now dedicate my time to my family, writing, Lifelearn and Australia (See, I'm certainly not retiring!)

As of July 1^st 2008, Dr Steve Noonan assumes ownership of EffectiVet. I will be Steve's senior advisor to give him the benefit of my experience. I encourage you to sit down with Steve to map out a plan for the rest of 2008 and for the coaching for you and your team beyond that.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with each and every veterinarian and their practice team members. Veterinarians constantly prove that we and our teams are the ‘salt of the earth'. Our love of animals and our passion for care cannot be matched by any other business or profession.
